Sounds of Lake Cave creates musical inspiration

Solo artist, IKSRE (Phoebe Dubar) has drawn inspiration from nature, including the water droplets in Lake Cave, for her third album that she describes as an ‘ambient, cinematic, experimental, dream pop and psychedelia’ and is quite unlike anything she has ever released.

Written, recorded and produced off grid in a solar-powered caravan during a 20,000km journey around Australia, the Melbourne-based vocalist, multi-instrumentalist, sound healer and producer created her album, expansion a – south on the road.

Armed with a small selection of instruments – electric guitar, her first foray into the instrument, OP-1 field synth, SM58 microphone, two small singing bowls and a selection of guitar pedals, she says every song was written after an awe-inspiring moment, but Margaret River blew her away.

The wildness, expansiveness and sheer beauty of the whole area. Forests, beaches, giant trees but the thing I loved the most was the caves

Water droplets in Lake Cave

Dubar describes lake cave (last winter’s rain) as the most experimental song on the album with delay-laden droplets punctuating psychedelic vocals, arps and singing bowls.

Getting the chance to record inside Lake Cave early one morning, was truly incredible. Usually when I edit my field recordings, I'm editing out road noise, airplanes or other ambient environmental sounds. But down there, the stillness and purity of these ancient sounds all around me, was something I'll never forget.
